Today marks a historic step toward transforming Somalia’s agricultural future. We officially launched a groundbreaking training program to equip 50 young agribusiness owners, students, and farmers with Internet of Things (IoT) skills to modernize farming and boost productivity.

From 776 applicants, only the most promising 50 youth — boys and girls alike — were selected after a rigorous competition. Over the coming months, they will gain hands-on expertise in smart irrigation, real-time crop monitoring, and other tech-driven solutions designed to tackle Somalia’s most pressing agricultural challenges.

The launch was officially presided over by @Hon_Maareeye, Minister of @moaisomalia, alongside the President of @JamhuriyaUniv, underscoring the importance of youth-led innovation for national growth.

“I’m proud that 50 Somali youth—boys & girls—were selected from 776 in a tough competition. We hope their knowledge brings smart solutions to our farming challenges. As a Ministry, we’re honored to support them.”
Minister Mohamed A. Hayir (@Hon_Maareeye)

The event also featured remarks from visionary leaders who emphasized the urgency of investing in agri-tech:

“I’m pleased to participate in the launch of a training by @thejicenter & #CIAD of @moaisomalia. Somalia gets ~20% of GDP from crops and ~65% including livestock, yet we import $2B in food yearly. We must empower youth to boost local production.”
Eng. @MohAhmedBlack

“We’re boosting Somalia’s agri productivity for food security, growth & jobs. Youth are leading this green revolution with energy, skills & innovation. By connecting farmers & businesses, we’re driving real tech solutions for agribusiness.”
Sowda Mire

“Today we launched the Youth Smart Farming Program — empowering young agripreneurs, farmers & students with IoT-driven solutions to tackle agri challenges. At #JIC, we see youth & tech as the future of Somali agriculture.”
Mohamed Abdi Elmi (@thejicenter)

With agriculture contributing nearly 20% of Somalia’s GDP from crops and around 65% when including livestock, this program is more than a skills-building initiative — it’s an investment in food security, economic growth, and national resilience.

By combining youth talent, modern technology, and strong institutional support, we are sowing the seeds for a smarter, greener, and more sustainable agricultural sector. This is the beginning of a new chapter where innovation meets tradition to drive lasting change.
